Membranes currently used in these devices were developed for blood-contacting systems, like hemodialysers or blood oxygenators, and show less than optimal performance in contact with hepatocytes. Tailor-made membranes of acrylonitrile copolymers with acrylamido-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) were developed for application in a bioartificial liver bioreactor to overcome this bottle-neck.
