Cationic organic dyes mediate the formation of loosely interconnected, highly anisotropic CuNCN crystals. Their thermal decomposition affords a macroporous CxNy polymer decorated with copper nanoislands. The hybrid is found to be highly active as hydrogenation catalysts.
