Hydrostatic extrusion of magnesium alloys

Abstract

This chapter deals with the capabilities and limitations of the hydrostatic extrusion process for the manufacturing of magnesium alloy sections. Firstly, the process basics for the hydrostatic extrusion of materials in general and of magnesium in particular are introduced. Next, some recent research and development issues are discussed, demonstrating the technical assets of hydrostatic extrusion over conventional extrusion methods and with particular reference to the extension of the process limits (extrusion speed and temperature) and the associated microstructures and mechanical properties (notably strength and its anisotropy). Finally, prospects for further development and anticipated application areas are considered.
