Twin Roll Casting and rolling of New Al-free Mg-Wrought Alloys

Abstract

An alternative cost efficient production route for magnesium sheets with improved properties is the feedstock production by twin roll casting (TRC). In the twin roll casting process liquid metal is pumped from a furnace or cast over a pipe into a tundish. The melt is then dragged into the roll gap of a pair of counter rotating, internally cooled rolls. The metal solidifies upon contact with the cooled rolls and gets rolled to a strip. The presented paper describes an approach to tackle handycaps of commercial Magnesium alloys by applying the twin roll casting and subsequent rolling of sheets to new developed wrought magnesium alloys. New aluminumfree Mg-alloys containing rare-earth elements (RE) are in the focus of this research. The simultaneous development of new wrought alloys and the magnesium twin roll casting process enables the production of high strength magnesium sheet with good formability at moderate temperatures. The properties of the sheet material produced will be discussed in terms of microstructure, texture and mechanical properties with special regard to formability.
