Structure characterization of the magnetosome solutions for hyperthermia study

Abstract

Structure characterization of the initial magnetosome chain solution (IM) and mechanically treated magnetosome solution (SM) was conducted by dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle neutron (SANS) and X-ray (SAXS) scattering. Experimental scattering curves of magnetosome IM and SM samples indicate the presence of polydisperse particles in the investigated solutions. Predominant amount of non-magnetic components (most probably lipids) was found from SANS contrast variation experiment. The values of forward scattering intensities confirm the differences in average sizes of samples prepared by various methods. The effect of sonication and filtering on size distribution and polydispersity was also confirmed by evaluating of hydrodynamic size distribution. This fact causes that SM sample magnetically behaves in a different manner showing that energy losses and specific absorption rate are noticeable reduced, and that indicates variation in the relaxation process and heat distribution.
