Feasibility of Deriving Damage Functions from Radar Measurements

Abstract

Locally extreme rainfall events are causing damage and will also be doing so in the coming decades. In the context of climate change and subsequent potential damage estimation, it is useful to know if it is possible to establish a relationship between heavy precipitation and reported losses through damages. This paper describes a first proof of concept, analysing the feasibility of formulating such a relationship on the basis of radar measured precipitation and loss reports. Two damage producing events have been investigated for this purpose, and first results demonstrate that extreme precipitation can be used to localize areas with high damage losses.
